Magine prepares for international expansion with appointment of new Chairman

Magine (www.magine.com), the Stockholm-headquartered cloud-based TV service, today announces the appointment of Kamal Bherwani, as its new Chairman in advance of further international expansion.

Following the creation of a partnership with ProSiebenSat.1 in January 2014 – the first time a third-party deal had been made to distribute all the leading German commercial broadcaster’s channels via an OTT service – Kamal Bherwani has accepted the role of Chairman at a time of continued growth within both existing and new international markets, with announcements anticipated over the coming months. At present, Magine is fully launched in its native Sweden, and is in beta form in Spain and Germany.

Mattias Hjelmstedt, CEO and Founder of Magine, comments: “In his role as Chairman, Kamal will help drive and fulfill our founding vision of establishing Magine as the leading international cloud-based TV service, and will contribute significantly to our preparation for future international roll-out and expansion.”

Appointment and Background of the new Chairman:

Magine’s new Chairman,Kamal Bherwani, 45, has been on the Magine board since September 2013, having previously held the roles of Chief Digital Officer and Chief Technology Officer at PRISA, the world's largest Spanish language media company, where he led its transformation from a traditional to a global digital media entity.

Kamal Bherwani, the newly-appointed Chairman of the Board of Magine, comments on his appointment: “Since its launch in March 2013, Magine has consistently proven its relevance and popularity to both consumers and content rights holders alike, and is in the ideal position to meet the market’s growing demand for next-generation TV offerings. I am delighted to be able to accept the role of Chairman, and continue to contribute to the overall direction and strategy as Magine consolidates its position within existing markets and moves into new territories.”

Kamal Bherwani replaces Michael Werner, who remains a member of the board of Magine.

What is Magine?

Magine is a secure cloud-based platform that allows broadcasters and content providers to deliver live and time-shifted TV, as well as catch-up and on demand programming, in the same place and across all devices. The business launched commercially in March 2013 in its native Sweden, hosting some of the world’s best known brands and channels, including Disney, Discovery, CNN International, BBC, Eurosport, National Geographic, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network as well as Swedish national broadcasters SVT and TV4. Beta versions have been rolled out in Germany (June 2013) and Spain (July 2013) with broadcasters relevant to each territory, and commercial launches set to follow.

How does it work?

To use Magine, a user simply signs up via the web to get live and time-shifted television on their TV screen, smartphone, tablet, or computer. With just a click and a QR code, the phone or the tablet turns into a remote control for the TV, guiding the viewer in content discovery and ‘second screen’ interactions. Magine also features a user-friendly UI, and offers enviable speed and high-quality picture delivery that adapts to the available internet connection.
