Conapto's data centers certified with global label for sustainable data, Fossil Free Data

In a digital world, data centers are both an important and energy-demanding infrastructure. But they mainly rely on fossil fuels, and the data center industry consumes as much energy as the global aviation industry. However, it is possible to run sustainable data center operations. Conapto's three data centers in Stockholm have now been certified with the global label for sustainable data, Fossil Free Data. This means that they meet strict requirements to be energy efficient, have low carbon dioxide emissions, and use 100% renewable electricity.

“Our certification of Conapto’s data centers not only highlights Sweden's unique conditions for sustainable data center operations but also that Conapto paves the way for green data usage. This is a big step in the right direction and we are truly happy to certify Conapto with FFD” says Patrik Öhlund, CEO of Node Pole.

Digitization together with the increased use of data is often seen as climate-smart, but as many of the world's data centers are run on fossil fuels it can have a major impact on the climate. Currently, data storage accounts for just over two percent of global carbon dioxide emissions and three percent of the world's energy consumption. This means that carbon dioxide emissions from data storage are on par with the global aviation industry according to the science journal Nature.

“We have been very focused on our sustainability strategy and the goal is clear, we want to be the sustainable alternative for data center colocation in Stockholm. The Fossil Free Data certification is another proof that we are on the right track and we are very proud to be one of the first in the world to pass it”, says Håkan Björklund, CEO of Conapto.
