Passenger traffic booming – cargo traffic decreased 3 % in 2012

10.6 million passengers travelled through the Port of Helsinki this year, which is 4% more than last year. The most popular travel destination was Tallinn. The line between Helsinki and Tallinn saw 7.6 million passengers. The passenger numbers for the Stockholm line remained stable at approximately 2.5 million passengers. Other destinations include St Petersburg, to which travel increased by 47%, Travemünde, Rostock and Gdynia.

International cruise ship traffic brought 400 000 passengers to Helsinki.

The Port of Helsinki is not only a passenger port but also a port for unitised cargo traffic. Due to the recession that reigned in 2012, cargo traffic via the Port of Helsinki decreased. Import and export amounted to 9.8 million tonnes, which is 3,4% less than last year. Import and export volumes were mutually balanced.

In addition to unitised cargo traffic, coal, sand and construction materials were imported via the port. Bulk cargo traffic totalled approximately 10,8 million tonnes.
