The LNG in Baltic Sea Ports project’s action plan published

The LNG in Baltic Sea Ports project’s action plan has now been published. The Port of Helsinki is one of seven Baltic Sea ports participating in the project, with the objective of finding a common solution to the refuelling of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the ports of the Baltic area. The other participating ports are Aarhus, Helsingborg, Copenhagen-Malmö, Tallinn, Turku and Stockholm.

The action plan is based on studies the project participants have conducted in order to support future investments. The Port of Helsinki also commissioned a study from Pöyry Oy on how the South, Katajanokka, West and Vuosaari harbours could offer liquefied natural gas to ships. The study, which is due to be finished soon, evaluated the viability of various solutions: LNG readiness at harbours, ship to ship bunkering and bunkering from tanker-lorries. Considering the current market situation, flexibility, safety, environmental issues and future development possibilities, ship to ship LNG bunkering was deemed the optimal solution.

Another key part of the LNG in Baltic Sea Ports project’s action plan is to create a shared stakeholder platform through which the project participants can share information and learn from each other: the goal of the project itself is to create a LNG Guidebook which will include the best practices and recommendations for the development of LNG infrastructure in ports.

The LNG in Baltic Sea Ports project will be completed by the end of 2014.
