Ragn-Sells’ circular nitrogen removal technology secures 19 MSEK

The Swedish environmental company Ragn-Sells, through its innovation company EasyMining, has been granted a 19 MSEK investment from the European Union’s LIFE programme for commercializing its patented method for removing nitrogen from sewage water. The circular solution enables water treatment facilities to capture nitrogen and use it as a fertilizer, thereby reducing emissions of greenhouse gas.

Ragn-Sells-owned NC Miljø in Denmark is first to recycle plastic from organic waste. The convenience store chain Netto is the first to use the recycled plastic and thanks to the new technology can offer its customers circular bin-liners, made from the company’s own organic waste.

Hazardous ash becomes clean road salt and fertilizer

The environmental company Ragn-Sells is now launching a new technique to extract pure salts from the fly ash which is produced when waste is incinerated. The global patent, Ash2Salt, enables valuable resources to be utilised, at the same time as the hazardous fly ash can be dealt with safely. The salts can be used as road salt and in fertilizer production, among other things.

– Our technique converts fly ash from a waste problem to a resource. We can thus stop sending environmental liabilities onward to future generations and instead derive benefit from the materials that we already have, says Mikael Hedström, head of Ragn-Sells Business Area Treatment & Detox in Sweden.

Every year energy is recovered from almost seven million tonnes of waste in Sweden through incineration and production of district heating and electricity. Fly ash, a hazardous form of waste with high contents of heavy metals and other toxic elements, arises when the flue gases are purified after the incineration process. The ash is currently deposited as hazardous waste after treatment. The Ash2Salt method, a global patent developed by Ragn-Sells’ innovation company, EasyMining, instead detoxify it and enables the valuable salts in the ash to be utilised.

The Ash2Salt process extracts three salts which can be sold on the raw materials market: sodium chloride, potassium chloride and calcium chloride. Sodium chloride, or common salt, can be used as road salt or within the chemical industry. Potassium chloride is an important plant nutrient which is needed for fertilizer production, and calcium chloride can be used to combat ice and dust on roads.

– We are contributing to enabling a non-renewable resource like potassium to be returned to the fields and benefitting food production. At the same time, Sweden avoids exporting hazardous waste to landfill abroad, which reduces transportation and saves both the environment and money, says Ulrik Améen, project manager at Ragn-Sells.

An element in the process is that the ash is washed before the desirable materials are extracted from the washing water. The washing makes the residual ash much less hazardous, which means that it can be deposited with less hazardous waste, reducing the need for landfill.

Production will take place at Ragn-Sells’ Högbytorp treatment plant in Bro outside Stockholm and the construction time is estimated at about 2 years.

Facts: Ash2Salt

Fly ash, a hazardous waste with high contents of heavy metals and chlorides among other things, is formed when flue gases are purified in connection with waste incineration. The Ash2Salt process washes the fly ash and three commercial salts are extracted from the wash liquid: sodium chloride, potassium chloride and calcium chloride. It is simpler to deposit the fly ash after it has been washed.

Using the Ash2 Salt method instead of putting the residual ash in a landfill for hazardous waste delivers a number of benefits, commercial as well as environmental.

Phosphorus, top of the agenda at World Resources Forum in Belgium

With several global patents for phosphorus recovery and examples of successful collaborations, Ragn-Sells and EasyMining are invited to speak at the World Resources Forum taking place in Belgium on February 26.

Through Ragn-Sells’ innovation company EasyMining, Ragn-Sells holds several global patents for extracting both phosphorus and rare earth metals from various types of waste.

– The scarcity of critical resources such as phosphorus and rare earth metals is a real challenge for the world. We therefore need new effective systems to recover and circulate materials that already have been extracted. A good example of this is the patented technology for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge and mining waste we have developed, says Jan Svärd, CEO at EasyMining.

One example is Ragn-Sells collaboration with the Swedish state own mining company LKAB. There the laboratory tests have been conducted and show that the patented KMAP technology can produce more phosphorus and rare earth metals from there mining waste than expected. Based on these positive results LKAB has taken the decision on further investments. (Link to LKABs' press release)

In parallel, EasyMining has also signed a letter of intent with the German utilities company Gelsenwasser AG. Under the agreement, a pilot study will be carried out with the objective to create a facility for phosphorus recovery from incinerated sewage sludge. ( Link to press release)

Phosphorus is listed on the EU's Critical Raw Materials (CRM) list and it is a crucial component for securing our food production. Therefore, phosphorus is top on the agenda when Ragn-Sells' Sustainability Director Pär Larshans and EasyMinings’ CEO Jan Svärd speaks at the World Resources Forum.

It handles the two types of apatite that LKAB produces in Kiruna and Malmberget in Sweden, and co-extracts phosphorus and rare earth metals. Without phosphorous fertilizers, agriculture could only produce half as much food. At the same time, phosphorus is a barrier: Today there is only one phosphate deposit in Europe. Materials (CRM) list. The world's largest deposit is found in north-western Africa. The phosphate ore contains high levels of heavy metal cadmium and uranium. LKAB's phosphorus product will be free of all heavy metals.

Rare earth metals are the collective name of a group of metallic elements. According to international conventions, a total of 17 elements are counted here. Many of them were discovered during the 17th and 19th centuries. Today, 95 % of the world's total production comes from mines in China. The metals are crucial for the production of computer processors, mobile phones and batteries.

Large investment in pilot plants for phosphorus recovery in Sweden

The formerly announced collaboration on phosphorus recovery between the environmental company Ragn-Sells and the state owned mining company LKAB is now taking the next step. LKAB will invest SEK 45 million in the continued feasibility study and pilot facilities in Malmfälten and Uppsala, Sweden.

The collaboration between Ragn-Sells and LKAB for the extraction of valuable minerals from mining waste began in the autumn of 2018. Laboratory tests have been conducted and show that the patented KMAP technology can produce more phosphorus and rare earth metals from LKAB's mining waste than expected.

- Thanks to the excellent results shown in our laboratory tests, we are confident to now invest in the continued pilot study and the new pilot facilities, says Jan Moström, CEO of LKAB.

To develop and prepare the technology for full scale industrialization, two pilot plants are now being built. One in Malmfälten next to the LKAB operations, and one in Uppsala located at Ragn-Sells’ innovation company EasyMining who has developed the patented KMAP technology.

- Our way of living today is based on unsustainable use of natural resources. Therefore, it is gratifying that our collaboration with LKAB contributes to the transition towards a more sustainable society where Sweden can become an exporting nation of phosphorus and other important raw materials, says Ragn-Sells’ CEO Lars Lindén.

In a full scale industry, the production of phosphorus is expected to deliver up to five times as much as Sweden's phosphorus needs, and that the production of rare earth metals will amount to 2 per cent of the global production.

The pilot phase runs until 2020 and a decision regarding investment in full scale production can be made in 2021.

- Our collaboration with Ragn-Sells is a very good example of circular economy, to reuse and recover resources, says Jan Moström, CEO LKAB.

Ragn-Sells and BIOFOS enter partnership on phosphorus recovery in Denmark

Ragn-Sells innovation company EasyMining and the Danish company BIOFOS have signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) for long-term cooperation on phosphorous recovery from incinerated sewage sludge. The partnership will reduce Denmark's imports of the critical raw material phosphorus by up to 10 percent.
