The VELUX Group and Little Sun launch Natural Light - International Design Competition

November 3, 2014 - The Natural Light Competition – an international design competition organized by the VELUX Group together with Little Sun, and powered by Sqore – is now open for students across the globe. The competition was initiated as a part of the upcoming 75th anniversary of the VKR Holding – parent company of the VELUX Group. This hallmark anniversary celebrates natural light as an affordable and sustainable solution to essential global challenges, while promoting innovation, creativity and technology for a greater purpose.

In the competition, design students are challenged to create an innovative solar-powered lamp design. 29,000 copies of the winning project will be produced and distributed globally, gaining broad exposure for the winning idea as well as creating a definite social impact.

Participants are required to submit their idea for a solar-powered lamp design. Special focus will be placed on the idea’s creativity – the organisers encourage students to push their boundaries while designing a brighter future for everyone. Winners will be announced in May 2015.

Little Sun solar LED lamps were first produced in 2012 and since then, over 200,000 lamps have been distributed globally. The VELUX Group sees its current partnership with the Little Sun social business, which resulted in this engaging competition, as a way to pursue its vision of creating better living environments for people across the globe.

In addition, there is a separate competition, “Capture the Sun!”, running concurrently with Natural Light in which anyone is encouraged to upload creative illustrations of the sun. Each month three winning entries will be selected by public vote.

The Natural Light competition will not only provide light to communities that need it the most, but will also raise awareness about sustainable energy and encourage innovation.
