Masters at Formex

The Formex interior design fair that will be held on August 21-24 will have a special focus on craftsmanship “Masters at Formex” is a new cooperation between Formex, the National Crafts Council and the National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies. The cooperation will be presented in an exhibition and a workshop.

“One of the strongest trends we are seeing now is craftsmanship. Unique collaborations and that we value knowledge and quality from a sustainability perspective will be highlighted through skilled craftsmen, and we would like to add some extra emphasis to this at the fair in August. Sweden has an incredible wealth of knowledge that we must foster, and we want to display expert craftsmanship from across the country,” says Christina Olsson, Project Area Manager at Formex.

Stefan Andersson is one of the masters who will be at Formex. Stefan has held ceramics exhibitions all over the world, and he works, among other things, with the production of ceramic goods for restaurants, including Frantzéns, Sweden’s only restaurant to receive three stars in the Michelin Guide. He will be joined by five other masters and journeymen to display examples of craftsmanship within the areas of woodcarving, hand weaving, embroidery, pottery and photography. The masters that will participate are Karl Sjögren, woodcarver; Arianna Funk, weaver; Katarina Evans, embroiderer; Stefan Andersson, potter; Erica Petersdotter, photographer; and Lena Lee, photographer. The masters and journeymen will visit the exhibition area to talk about their work, and visitors will be offered a hands-on experience.

The editor of the magazine, Hemslöjd, will interview the masters and journeymen from the exhibition on stage. The National Association of Swedish Handicraft Societies (Hemslöjden) and the National Crafts Council (Hantverksrådet) will also participate in the on-stage discussions, which will touch on topics such as:
What brings people to pursue a career as a craftsman today? What are the challenges?
Why should a person become a journeyman? Why should someone employ a master?
