ENGIE and ZÜBLIN complete second Telekom data centre in Biere on schedule
- Joint venture of ZÜBLIN and ENGIE in charge of construction
- Dynamic Data Center, Germany’s largest cloud data centre, to begin operations in late summer 2018
The joint venture DDC Biere BA 2 consisting of Ed. Züblin AG und ENGIE Deutschland GmbH handed over the key to the new data centre in Biere near Magdeburg today. The expansion of the Dynamic Data Center through three additional modules and one office building was thus completed on schedule. Construction began in June 2016 to build a complex with 3,600 m2 of IT space for up to 30,000 physical servers. The project involved laying more than 100 km of cable, installing 34,000 t of concrete and steel, and moving 155,000 m3 of soil.
To guarantee the smooth handling of the works, the joint venture partners designed and simulated the project in 3D already during the design phase using Building Information Modelling (BIM). This means that the data centre in Biere was first built digitally and then for real. The work was carried out according to a tight schedule following the principles of LEAN.Construction. Another factor for the successful completion of the data centre was the partnering working relationship among all project participants.
From early 2017, ZÜBLIN continuously transferred building areas to its joint venture partner ENGIE for the installation of the complex technical equipment. The technology unites an outstanding level of energy efficiency with the highest standards for operational safety. With green building certification to LEED Gold and a PUE value (power usage effectiveness) of ≤1.3, the data centre in Biere is the most energy-efficient in its class.
Biere: Data hub for international cloud business
The Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Systems International GmbH, the tenant of the Dynamic Data Center, operates data centres worldwide.
Together with the nearly identical T-Systems data centre in Magdeburg, the new data centre in Biere forms part of a twin-core facility. In this type of data centre, all programs and data are stored in parallel at two sites. In the event of an outage at one centre, the twin is immediately available to take its place so that all data are always available.
The twin data centres in Biere and Magdeburg – with construction led by ZÜBLIN – went online in 2014. The operational start of the Biere data centre expansion that was now completed by ENGIE and ZÜBLIN will increase cloud capacities at the site by 150 %.
