STRABAG AG lays cornerstone for new company headquarters in Cologne
- STRABAG project demonstrates the future of construction: use of BIM.5D® (Building Information Modelling)

Construction on the new STRABAG AG headquarters in Cologne-Deutz began at the beginning of the year. Today, Germany’s largest transportation infrastructure company reached an important milestone on the construction site. Some 70 project participants and invited guests took part in the symbolic laying of the cornerstone for the new STRABAG group headquarters with the working title of “SIEGI.241” – so named after the address Siegburger Str. 241. The total investment for the five-storey building including underground car park amounts to around € 45 million. Construction is scheduled to last about 20 months. Main construction contractor is Ed. Züblin AG, the STRABAG SE group company for building construction and civil engineering.
“STRABAG AG has had its head office in Cologne for about 70 years. We feel a close bond to the city, are committed to the location here in Deutz and with our new construction project look forward to demonstrating our group know-how in terms of Construction 4.0. Efficient design and construction using BIM.5D® and lean construction – that’s what we are doing here in partnership with our group entities,” said Marcus Kaller, member of the management board of STRABAG AG, at the cornerstone laying.
STRABAG motto “TEAMS WORK.” in action
The modern new construction with around 17,100 m² of gross floor space, scheduled to be ready for occupation in the autumn of 2018, will promote the even closer networking and cooperation of the different disciplines of the STRABAG Group under one roof. STRABAG currently maintains several different office buildings in Siegburger Straße as well as a location in Alfred Schütte Allee. Now the staff will be coming together at one location, in line with the company philosophy and motto “TEAMS WORK.”. The existing building from 1998 will be connected to the new construction, giving SIEGI.241 enough space for about 1,000 employees from different group entities such as ZÜBLIN, STRABAG Real Estate, SAT or BRVZ.
Already during the design and construction phase, SIEGI.241 is a real “TEAMS WORK.” project: “We are applying the full range of our services to the new construction – from digital design to earthworks and ground engineering to turnkey building construction to building services and facility management. This makes the project special for us. SIEGI.241 gives us a chance to optimise the ‘future of construction’ from the point of view of all construction project participants,” says management board member Kaller.
Construction 4.0: the future of construction
Digitalisation has plenty of potential for the construction industry. A central driver of the digital transformation is Building Information Modelling (BIM). BIM digitally networks all of the relevant data across a project’s entire lifecycle.
The STRABAG Group has further developed Building Information Modelling under the designation “BIM.5D®”. BIM.5D® complements the tried-and-proven 3D model with the factor of time (4D) and other process data, e.g. costs (5D). BIM.5D® has been successfully used at a number of different construction projects, most recently BLOX in Copenhagen, the ThyssenKrupp Test Tower in Rottweil and the Rastatt Tunnel. As an internal pilot project, SIEGI.241 can help develop BIM.5D® even further.
Andreas Iselborn, ZÜBLIN project manager for SIEGI.241, explains the advantages of BIM.5D® in practice: “The five-dimensional model shows us the changes to the construction project in real time. An actual/target comparison is constantly made between the construction schedule and the actual progress of construction. Deviations from the design are recognised immediately and displayed automatically in the virtual model. The information is immediately available to all participants.” The STRABAG management board also sees this as an important benefit for clients: “Thanks to BIM.5D®, all project participants will always be comprehensively informed, networked with the others and have the same information – across the entire building lifecycle. This facilitates a partnership-based working relationship that is at eye level and which creates cost, design and scheduling security at a level that has never been seen before.”
