ZÜBLIN Environmental Technology brightens up the floral display at IGA

  • Innovative in-situ process to control the water supply for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in Berlin
  • ZÜBLIN combines iron and manganese removal with state-of-the-art systems and control technology
  • Environmentally friendly and efficient groundwater treatment

Züblin Umwelttechnik GmbH has been chosen to control the water supply for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in Berlin (13 April – 15 October 2017) using an innovative interpretation of the conventional in-situ treatment process. The company’s team of experts combined the basic principle of underground iron and manganese removal with state-of-the-art technology and quickly realised an efficient and environmentally friendly process for watering the floral displays and to supply the countless water attractions and the aquatic playground at the IGA in the Berlin borough of Marzahn-Hellersdorf.

The system is capable of treating up to 120 m³ of iron-containing groundwater in one hour to yield crystal-clear water without the need for filter containers or separators. The process leaves no filter residues or iron sludge which has to be disposed at high cost. This is because the resource-saving and environmentally friendly process of underground iron and manganese removal lowers the natural iron content of the water. The process complies with the Drinking Water Ordinance and also avoids rust-brown deposits both on buildings as well as in the watering and irrigation system.

Patent from the year 1900

It is the oxygenation of the groundwater with natural oxygen and the special operation practice of the supply well, cycled as an infiltration and extraction well, that makes it possible to treat the groundwater and to supply the 104 hectare IGA grounds. The in-situ process is based on a patent by G. Oesten from the year 1900 and is still used in water treatment solutions in the 21st century.

Berlin blossoms

Under the motto “An OCEAN of colours”, IGA Berlin 2017 addresses the fascinating contrasts of the German capital: from intercultural theme gardens to sunny bench terraces to large open-air concerts in the newly built arena with up to 5,000 seats. The breathtaking landscape, including the internationally renowned Gardens of the World, offers guests of the IGA the possibility to experience traditional garden art as well as inspiring exhibition contributions for a green, sustainable way of life.
