​The 12 Trailblazing days of Christmas: IoT finalists

Another newcomer category, the theme of the Internet of Things has arguably been the buzzword of 2014, with future market predictions grabbing the headlines. Many predict great things for the IoT industry by 2020, with Communication Technology’s research indicating the Internet of Things Technology & Application market will be worth $1423.09 billion by 2020. Also, analyst thinktank IDATE have predicted 80 billion things to be connected to the Internet by 2020. Tech Trailblazers welcomed IoT entrants from a variety of sectors this year. The following startups made their mark on the category for the judges – so let’s take a closer look…

Focusing on Smart Cities, Finnish startup Cyberlightning is a 3D Internet Company with next generation controlling and monitoring solutions for IoT networks. Cyberlightning offers tools to better understand complex information and improve business operations using stationary and mobile platforms. The company recently announced a $4.2million funding round, with backers including Fortum PLC and Inventure.

EnergyDeck, a web-based platform that gathers energy and resource data, providing feedback to users that enables the acceleration of energy efficiency technology and practice. Founded in 2011, the UK startup is privately funded.

Also amongst the Big Data frontrunners this year, London-based Flying Binary is a privately funded web science company changing the world with data. Flying binary’s HM Government accredited Big Data and IoT cloud services ensure that users profit from the web.

US-based startup Oort is a technology that will enable consumers to control their appliances with a single app regardless of their producer. People can create a unique home automation system that turns a user’s mobile device into a remote control that has the power to turn off lights, measure air-quality, keep track of objects and many more. According to CrunchBase, Oort received $1M Seed funding in July 2014.
