Wavetec’s “BIG SCREEN” at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

ITAB, in a strategic partnership with Wavetec, won the tender to supply install and support a large external LED display screen at GSC. This project was called the Glasgow Science Center (GSC) project, and was in collaboration with BBC Scotland.

Glasgow Commonwealth games is one of the largest, multi-sport event in the world which attracted around 5000 athletes from 71 different nations and territories competing in 18 different sports. This year, the 2014 Commonwealth Games (officially the XX Commonwealth Games) were held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014.

Wavetec manufactured a LED screen with a total cover area of 55 m2 (15.3 mt width x 3.6 mt height) with a high resolution achieved with an 8 mm pitch. This was required in order to provide a superb viewing experience to the audience standing near to the screen. Furthermore, the SMD technology of the LEDs, allowed for a wide viewing angle without compromising on the brightness of the videos and images. The content of the screen was managed by Wavetec’s web based CMS and Canvas Designer.

Having won the honour of hosting the opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games around the Science Centre on the banks of River Clyde in Glasgow, the challenge remained to be able to display live videos at the Glasgow Science Centre’s main entrance. The central idea was to develop an effective and captivating visual impact engaging the audience visiting the site.

The high resolution LED display, provided by Wavetec, was placed in the front facing “features wall” located at the Glasgow Science Centre. It played a prominent role both before and during the Commonwealth Games as it provided a range of cultural and informative programs and videos about the event. The screen is flanked by two Glasgow iconic buildings and will remain as part of the games legacy providing signage and interactive educational content for the Glasgow Science Centre.

Wavetec’s Video Wall is being used for live coverage of events, shows and in the past weeks the screen played a key role attracting visitors to the Commonwealth Games 2014 where viewers experienced the buzz of the all competitions at the outdoor deck.

Moreover, Glasgow Science Center´s high resolution LED display was termed as the “Big Screen” and became a center attraction in the cultural festival showcasing the best of Glasgow and Scotland’s arts and culture alongside that of the Commonwealth. The Big Screen broadcasted the opening and closing ceremony, live news, competitions, and live-streaming content from BBC. The opening ceremony launch was attended by around 3500 members of the public, all gathered around the giant LED screen.
