Survey: Europeans relax better when they check email during vacation
New technologies, such as smartphones and cloud-services, have found their way into the working world with incredible pace and have changed the way we work, both at and away from the office. Projectplace, the European leader in online project collaboration, has conducted an international survey in order to find out if employees across Europe will make use of the possibility to be connected to work email and documents during summer vacation and what motivates their decision. The survey revealed that half of the 800 European participants are planning to check their work email while on holiday.
In particular, respondents from Scandinavia stated that they will check their work email while on vacation, with Norway topping the charts with 59 percent followed by Sweden with 51 percent. The readiness to scan the work inbox is also quite high in Germany (48 percent) and Denmark (43 percent) compared to the Netherlands (33 percent) and the U.K. (36 percent) where the majority is not planning to check their work email.
One might argue that reading work-related emails can spoil one’s vacation, but the survey results paint a different picture. Every third respondent stated that keeping track of work related emails helped them to relax. One participant specified: “I feel that spending 5-10 minutes a day on holiday checking my email helps me to plan what I will pick up when I get back to the office. That Monday morning feeling when you have to trawl through hundreds of emails isn’t one my favorite things to do.”
The survey results further indicate that those who are planning to read their work emails during vacation are used to working remotely. Respondents that will check their inboxes while on holiday often stated that their employers encourage remote working: Denmark, 89 percent, Sweden 85 percent, Norway 81 percent, Germany 82 percent. It can be assumed that new technologies that allow for a more flexible way of working have already had a considerable impact on the working culture in those countries.
