​Nordic major SF Studios takes on Borg and McEnroe

The Nordic major SF Studios will produce the feature film Borg/McEnroe.

Borg/McEnroe is a film of one of the world’s greatest icons Björn Borg and his biggest rival, the young and talented John McEnroe. It's a story of two men that became legends and the prize they had to pay.

The film stars Swedish award winning actor Sverrir Gudnason as Borg, American actor Shia LaBeouf as his tennis court rival, John McEnroe. As Borg’s trainer, the legendary Lennart “Labbe” Bergelin, Swedish acclaimed actor Stellan Skarsgård returns for a major part in a Swedish film for the first time in almost ten years.

Principal shooting will take off on locations in Sweden, Prag, Monaco, London and New York during the fall of 2016 and the film is planned for a fall 2017 theatrical release.

It is an extremely ambitious project and to have international talent such as Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård, together with Sverrir Gudnason in the film is absolutely amazing. The film is also the first step in SF Studios’ intention to produce commercial high-quality films for the international market,” say producers Jon Nohrstedt and Fredrik Wikström Nicastro.

Borg / McEnroe will be directed by the multiple international award-winning Danish director Janus Metz (True Detective, Armadillo).

“This is a very powerful drama that plunges deep into the minds of two extremely interesting personalities living in an explosive era. I am very honored and excited to be at the reigns of it”, says Janus Metz.

The film is penned by Ronnie Sandahl (writer and director of the internationally award-winning Swedish film Underdog (Svenskjävel, 2015).

- During these past three years, I've been trying to write my way under the skin of sporting history's two most iconic rivals”, says Ronnie Sandahl and continues “What emerged is a drama of two young men with the weight of the world on their shoulders, forced to realize that your worst enemy may also be the only one who truly gets you”.

Borg / McEnroe is produced by SF Studios (A Man Called Ove, Easy Money trilogy) in co-production with FilmVäst, Nordisk Film, Sveriges Television and Yellow Film & TV with support from the Swedish Film Institute, Nordic Film & TV Fund, MEDIA and SF Studios’ partner Sirena Film.

Shia LaBeouf is represented by CAA and John Crosby Management, Sverrir Gudnason, Stellan Skarsgård and Ronnie Sandahl by Agentfirman Planthaber / Kilden / Mandic and Janus Metz by CAA and Cinetic.
