Spruce is fundamentally too soft a material to withstand wear and tear in public spaces. However, Bjelin’s patented curing technology makes the wooden surface hard enough to be used in environments with tough requirements for wear resistance and sustainability.
From hand planed wooden planks to industrial manufacturing - floors from spruce have been produced for centuries and are now experiencing a revival with their beautiful and tactile qualities being rediscovered by a new generation of interior designers and architects. Spruce has traditionally been used as lining underneath a wall-to-wall carpet or under a parquet floor, due to the softness of the wood.
- We can finally offer a durable collection of flooring at competitive prices with the beautiful spruce playing the leading role, says Johan Larsson, Sales & Marketing Director at Bjelin.
The new material efficient spruce flooring are produced in a newly built plant in Viken in the southern Swedish province of Skåne. Investments in production capacity in Sweden is driven by increased demand for premium products with minimal impact on the environment. The spruce comes from Slovenia, a region in Croatia with a long tradition of forestry which safeguards regrowth. The spruce grows in forests maintained and managed in a sustainable way within a strict ecological, social and economic framework.
Bjelin’s patented technology allow the cured planks to cover 10 times the surface compared to parquet flooring made with conventional technology, since the material layer can be very thin without being brittle. This resource efficient technology produces up to 28 cm wide and 240 cm long wooden planks. The surface is cured under high pressure and heat, creating a material four times as hard as the original spruce. The surface, treated with hard wax oil combined with the hard wood material, creates an almost maintenance free floor.
The underlying technology is licenced through Bjelin’s research & development company Välinge Innovation to other flooring manufacturers under the brand Woodura®.
See and experience the new flooring collection on display at Bjelin’s stand [A25:28] at Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2020 and in Bjelin’s Showroom at Sibyllegatan 38, Stockholm.
