Croatia marked its invention of the bow tie Thursday with a series of celebrations and events in Zagreb’s Markov Trg.
The Day of the Tie also saw children’s quizzes about its history in local schools. The bow tie originated among 17th century Croatian mercenaries fighting in the Prussian wars as a means of holding the opening of their shirts together.
It was later adopted by upper class Frenchmen who called it cravat (the French for Croat).
The bow tie soon became a must have accessory, flourishing in the 18th and 19th centuries.
