Thanks to this status, Šibenik is visited by an ever growing number of tourists. The Cathedral of St. Jakov, built more than half a millennium ago, is a unique masterpiece of world architecture. The construction techniques applied are rare and visitors are particularly fascinated by the stone construction without the connective tissue. It was built for over 100 years and its creators are Juraj Dalmatinac and Nikola Firentinac.
Also valued was the fact that Šibenik has four forts that have not yet been reconstructed or put in a tourist- cultural function, but despite a neglected appearance, attract attention by their original beauty and harmonious stone construction in stone, especially the maritime fortress of St. Nikola.
The Swiss Tourism Award 2012 will be handed out to representatives of Šibenik at a ceremony in Lugano, as part of the Swiss International Holiday Exhibition in December of this year. Last year this award was won by Rijeka.
