Uppsala's meeting destination ambassadors!

Pressmeddelande   •   Apr 17, 2009 17:09 CEST

On Wednesday, March 25 Uppsala recognized some of its foremost ambassadors at its annual Ambassador's Dinner. All who were invited to this event, held at Hyllan Restaurant in Uppsala Market Hall this year, have played a key part in attracting conferences and meetings to Uppsala.

Meetings and conferences attract a substantial number of visitors to Uppsala every year. In addition to conference fees and travel, each participant spends money in the region. Obviously, all of these meetings directly benefit the local tourist industry such as hotels, restaurants, retail trade, sightseeing arrangers, and taxi companies. They also serve to highlight Uppsala's many advantages and bring attention to other businesses and organizations in the region. Furthermore, the meeting industry is a very labour-intensive sector that provides the local economy with many jobs.

"Meetings and conferences direct focus on their hosts and the organisations they are affiliated with, as well as giving more people from the host organization access to the knowledge produced by these events," said Charlotte Ullberg, the Ambassador Dinner organizer. "It takes a lot to put together and run a successful event. Wednesday's dinner is meant as a tribute and incentive to all the people who worked so hard to arrange a sizeable meeting in Uppsala during the last year."

This year's event attracted even more participants than last year. This was partly due to the increased number of meetings held in Uppsala, as well as an increased interest in the Ambassador's dinner itself.

Prizes were awarded for the following two categories:

  • "The person or organisation that arranged the largest number of meetings in Uppsala in 2008."
  • "The person or organisation that generated the largest number of hotel nights in Uppsala 2008."

City council chairman Gunnar Hedberg handed out prizes to the following:

"Our designated ambassadors see to it that Uppsala remains on the map," says Anna Lindström, marketing coordinator from Uppsala Tourism. " When they invite their colleagues to conferences they are also pull in extra knowledge and competence which not only stimulates the local meeting industry, but our entire city as well."

According to the statistics, Uppsala is a popular place to meet. For example, 27 international meetings were held in Uppsala just last year. Meetings that generated 80 million SEK in revenues for the area.

"I think of Uppsala as a big city, with all the charm of a small town. It is close to Arlanda Airport and close to all the attractions in Stockholm," said Ewa Hagberg, who arranged the annual national convention for the Swedish Red Cross in Uppsala in 2008.

"We have a lot to show visitors to Uppsala," said Rune Engvall who, together with Karl Ingmar Jansson, arranged the Odd Fellows Golf Tournament in Uppsala last year.

Change and Development were the driving idea for the evening. In addition to food, entertainment, and awards ceremony, guests were even treated to a light show that shifted colors and moods as the evening proceeded. The theme? Metamorphosis, a word heavy with meaning in Uppsala.

"At the moment Uppsala is undergoing a metamorphosis from a small town to a big town," confirmed Gunnar Hedberg, chairman of the Uppsala City Council. "Not a big city, mind you, we're never going to be one of those. Rather, a large scale town."

"Right now Uppsala is growing, just seething with life," concluded Charlotte Ullberg from Uppsala Tourism. "A lot of really interesting activities are finding their way to Uppsala, which is the point we are trying to make tonight. Uppsala is undergoing a lot change as a town. A lot of exciting things are happening here right now."
