Ane Brun with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani in eight performances from 23 January

After releasing two new albums this fall, music artist Ane Brun starts 2021 with eight performances at The Göteborg Opera, which presents her music in a completely new way.

12 Songs is a staged artwork created for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani by choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström in collaboration with Ane Brun, the Göteborg Opera Orchestra and guest musicians. The show includes three songs never performed live before.

Since her debut in 2003, the Stockholm-based Norwegian singer has gained a large following in Scandinavia and the rest of the world. A multiple award winner, Ane Brun has made several acclaimed stage appearances with symphony orchestras. She has performed at sold-out stadiums as well as at the Nobel Prize ceremony. In the staged artwork 12 Songs, she and choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström present her music in a completely new way.

12 Songs is a very exciting production to be part of. I love dance and am incredibly moved by good dancers and choreography. I’m sure that seeing the dancers perform to my own music will be a magical experience. I’m also delighted to have yet another chance to perform my songs with a large orchestra, something I’ve done a lot over the years. I look forward to singing with the Göteborg Opera Orchestra, and hope to experience my songs through Kenneth Kvarnström’s eyes and discover what movements he sees in my tunes and stories,” Ane Brun says.

“This will be an unusual performance involving the third element of dance, where the dancers will interpret my music on the stage as I perform the songs. I’m sure it will be magical! I’m deeply impressed with Göteborgsoperans Danskompani, and feel very humble and proud to be working with them and with Kenneth Kvarnström. I’ve seen my music interpreted by dancers many times in the past, but never while I was on the stage.”

Kenneth Kvarnström, from Finland, is one of the Nordic region’s most successful choreographers. After several years as dance director of such cultural institutions as Dansens Hus and Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm, he has returned to working as a freelance choreographer. Infused with subtle surprises, his choreography speaks a clear language where a musical flow of movement is interwoven with sung lyrics.

“I carried the idea around for several years without finding the right context for it. Then an opening presented itself about two years ago with GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, and luckily Ane found the time for it – although releasing new albums and planning a world tour. We’ve chosen twelve old and new songs and will build independent poetic universes around them. Some will be bursting with blackened colours, others will take the form of silent deep sea immersions or feather-light absurdities, and many will be about you and me. Now I’ve got the most exciting time ahead: entering the rehearsal studio and starting work with the dancers and Ane’s music. We’ll be well prepared by 23 January,” says Kenneth.

In 12 Songs, Kenneth resumes collaboration with fashion and costume designer Astrid Olsson, whose stage creations are an experience in their own right. The costumes evolve in pace with the twelve songs, developing from minimalist to extravagant creations. 12 songs will be the first chance in a long time to hear Ane Brun live before she embarks on a European tour.
