Streaming of Wagner’s Siegfried over the weekend of 26-28 March – open to everyone and free of charge

The four-year tour de force of staging Wagner’s entire Ring Cycle in Gothenburg for the first time now enters its third phase. And this year’s circumstances are decidedly different. Siegfried will be streamed during the weekend of 26-28 March on gofilm.se. Viewers can watch one act a day or all three acts from Sunday until Wednesday 31 March. Critics can watch the three acts in advance.

In autumn 2018, we saw the end of the world begin in the prologue, Das Rheingold. And 2019 the story continued with Die Walküre. The third part, Siegfried, planned for late autumn 2020, was cancelled due to the pandemic – but filmed and will be streamed on gofilm.se this weekend 26-28 March – with no login required and no admission charge. All three acts will be available until Wednesday 31 March.

Wagner’s musical dramas Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung changed the entire course of music history and artistic expression as we know it. Over four performance seasons, The Göteborg Opera will give one part of the Ring Cycle per year, with the finale late 2021. The four operas are conducted by Evan Rogister, Principal Conductor of Washington National Opera. The director is Stephen Langridge, The Göteborg Opera’s artistic director for Opera/Drama in 2013–2019. He highlights the sustainability aspect of the Ring’s plot, choosing to emphasise how violating the laws of nature leads to the world’s destruction. Sustainability issues also affect the artistic choices. Responsible for the set design and costumes is award-winning English stage designer Alison Chitty.

Stephen Langridge on this Siegfried:

“It was an odd rehearsal period due to the restriction around Covid-19. We were all glad to be working when so many colleagues across Europe had lost all their work and income. To be able to sing, act, play, and share the experience with an audience, even if they are not present in the same room: what joy. Never again will we take it for granted. We adapted our ways of working, maintaining distance at all times on and off stage, and it’s a tribute to the can-do attitude of the people at GöteborgsOperan, and the positive engagement of the brilliant cast, that we were able to continue and produce what we all hope will be an exciting digital version of Siegfried. We had hoped for a digital premiere before Christmas, but had to abandon that at short notice, before we had a chance to complete the recordings we had planned. The result, after much work and digital “knitting”, is a version of our Siegfried unusually featuring two excellent singers playing Der Wanderer! I hope you will enjoy this third part of our journey, and look forward to being together again in a post-viral packed theatre next year for Götterdämmerung. As Brünnhilde would say: Hojatoho.”

The title role is sung by American tenor Daniel Brenna, and the role has figured strongly in his stellar international career. Mime is sung by Dan Karlström and the role of the Wanderer is shared by Fredrik Zetterström (Act 1 and 2) and Anders Lorentzson (Act 3). Alberich will once again be performed by Olafur Sigurdarson, Fafner is performed by Mats Almgren and Hege Høisæter returns in the role of Erda. The Woodbird is sung by Sofie Asplund while Brünnhilde is sung by Ingela Brimberg.

Streamed over the weekend of 26-28 March 2021. Musical drama in three acts by Richard Wagner. Running time: approx. 4 hours excl. intermissions. Sung in German with Swedish and English subtitles (choose the link for your chosen language).

  • Act 1 will be available to watch from Friday 26 March until Wednesday 31 March.
  • Act 2 will be available to watch from Saturday 27 March until Wednesday 31 March.
  • Act 3 will be available to watch from Sunday 28 March until Wednesday 31 March.

REVIEWS: To facilitate their work, critics will be able to watch all three acts of Siegfried in advance. Please contact press@opera.se for more information.
