Stigmas, taboos and shame in AnnaLeena Prykäri's BFA solo exhibition at Konstfack

VERNISSAGE IN VITA HAVET WEDNESDAY 15 FEBRUARY, 4–9 PM

365 (let's talk about it)

In her practice AnnaLeena Prykäri explores mental illnesses in society and the person behind a diagnosis. Silenced, ignored and marginalized topics are discussed from personal and emotional viewpoints.

Through her work Prykäri intends to embody the person behind a label in order to displace and highlight the stigmas, taboos and shame associated with mental illness; from the pharmacy shelves to the daily discussions. She aims to reveal the positive and negative sides of a diagnosis.

Prykäri often utilizes opposites in her work which are developed through her concepts, materials and even in her long working process. This enables her to create works that are complex, yet express a touch of dark irony in order to open up the topic.

Prykäri also interlaces personal and political aspects of a diagnosis with the duality in theme. She utilizes the interconnections between these themes collectively with the material`s anatomy, poetry and emotional foundation.

In her conceptual exhibition 365 (let's talk about it) Prykäri references pain, sorrow and shame, as well as the complexity of diagnostics, the control of chaos and a personal archive – 365 days, 52 weeks of the year.

This exhibition will be the first time Prykäri presents her topic in a larger scale for the public.

The exhibition is open 15–19 February, Thursday–Friday 10 am to 6 pm, Saturday–Sunday 12 to 4 pm
