NorrlandsOperan transports Mozart into the future
This spring NorrlandsOperan in Umeå, Sweden takes on an opera glistening with water and dripping with humour: The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart which in this version takes place in the future. More precisely, the year 2068.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the music to the opera in 1786 with text by Lorenzo da Ponte based on Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais' comedy La mariage de Figaro. At NorrlandsOperan, the events are transported from a sunny 1700s scene to a dry 2068. Climate change is a fact, and outside the Almavivas' villa we find only desert. In a society where the upper crust no longer measure wealth in gold, the count is rich with water.
The Marriage of Figaro is a comedy, but there is also room for reflection here. Director Linda Mallik:

NorrlandsOperan in Umeå was founded in 1974. Over the years, we have developed from a regional opera ensemble into a centre for performing arts with regional commissions and a broad range of activities. NorrlandsOperan includes a symphony orchestra and opera, dance, music departments, as well as our own contemporary art gallery.
In 2014 NorrlandsOperan played an important role in the European Capital of the Culture Year in Umeå. It featured the opera productions Elektra (R. Strauss) in open air by La Fura dels Baus and the world premiere of Blanche & Marie (Mats Larsson Gothe), nominated for International Opera Awards 2015.
