Do we need to create symbolic objects to create an order or a structure, whether in the form of physical artifacts or institutions?
One could argue, that, as individuals, we can believe in certain ideas: however, in and through the process of convincing others of them, they take a certain shape, and form institutions that embody these ideas: the state, the nuclear family, the king, the business enterprise, etc, and in the end, physical artifacts: parliament buildings, churches, living rooms, stock exchanges. Around these objects, the institutions that we all maintain are being shaped.
Anaïde Chirinian’s Cathedral portrays an institution that used to reign, but is now fighting for it’s raison d’être, stubbornly proud but somewhat lost and decapitated in a society that worships the almighty dollar above all else. The piece could be seen as an ironic showdown to battle the double standards deeply rooted over the centuries.
