Hyperactive kids: Fish oil could offer some help
Children diagnosed with ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) may benefit from taking supplements of omega-3 fatty acids.
Fish oil is associated with a long list of health benefits and according to a scientists, it may even be a good idea to give supplements of omega-3 fatty acids to children with ADHD – or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Reporting in the October-issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, two researchers working for the Yale Child Study Center conclude on behalf of a meta-analysis of 10 scientific trials involving 699 children that fish oil supplementation demonstrates a small but statistically significant effect in improving ADHD symptoms.
Safe to use
The researchers pointed to the fact that current drugs used to ameliorate ADHD symptoms were more effective than fish oil. However, fish oil is not associated with the side effects typically observed in prescription drugs and is therefore a good and safe alternative that deserves more scientific attention. They also stressed that fish oil may be used to augment traditional pharmacological interventions, or it may provide a viable option for those who do not wish to treat their children with chemical drugs.
Omega-3 fatty acids work in different ways, some of which could be potentially beneficial with individuals suffering from ADHD. For instance, this class of essential fatty acids is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that may protect brain cells. Also, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have a positive effect on brain levels of two important neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is important for the sense of well-being, while dopamine controls things like cognition, motivation, mood, attention, and learning skills.

Choosing the right fish oil
Pharma Nord’s fish oil preparation, Bio-Marine Plus, is a good choice for long-term consumption. First of all, the fish oil is purified with one of the world’s leading purification techniques (PureMax™) that ensures the lowest possible levels of environmental toxins like heavy metals and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) that occur naturally in fish. The PureMax technology purifies the fish oil to the point where the remaining levels of such toxins are substantially lower than the threshold levels claimed by health authorities to be safe for human consumption.
Secondly, Bio-Marine Plus contains vitamin B12 and folic acid, two B-vitamins that support the omega-3 fatty acids in maintaining good cardiovascular health.
