BP/ Aral to deploy MasterCard® PayPass™ contactless payment technology across the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland

7 June 2011, London, UK - MasterCard has today announced that BP / Aral will begin deploying MasterCard® PayPass™ contactless payments terminals across its forecourts in the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland over the next two years.

The development means that consumers with MasterCard PayPass and Maestro® PayPass™ enabled cards will be able to ‘Tap & Go™’ to pay for everyday purchases up to the value of £15 in the UK, €25 in Germany and 40 Swiss Francs in Switzerland at BP / Aral forecourt shops across the three countries, simply by tapping their card on a PayPass terminal at the point of sale. They can also continue to use the same cards for higher value transactions, authenticated with a PIN or signature.

Jurgen Bloemers, Marketing and Cards Director Europe, said: “Our forecourt shops are destinations for consumers, not just for fuel, but for convenience items such as coffee, snacks and top-up shopping. We are constantly looking for efficiencies in our operations and the development of contactless payment for low value transactions speeds up the transaction and reduces the handling of cash by our employees.”

Javier Perez, President of MasterCard Europe says: “As PayPass momentum builds across Europe, we’re delighted to be working with a household name like BP to grow the awareness and acceptance of contactless in three key markets, making consumers’ lives easier by enabling them to simply Tap & Go to make quick, convenient and secure purchases.”

To pay, consumers simply need to touch their PayPass-enabled card on a specially equipped terminal, removing the need to dip a card, enter a PIN or provide a signature. Meanwhile, potential benefits to retailers include a reduction in queues, increased speed through the checkout, an increase in transaction volumes at peak times and a reduction in cash handling costs.

The popularity and reach of PayPass continues to grow rapidly. As of the first quarter of 2011, more than 92 million PayPass cards and devices have been issued for use at approximately 311,000 merchant locations worldwide.

BP sites

There are around 1,170 BP branded sites in the UK, more than 400 in Switzerland and 2,500 Aral branded sites in Germany.
