Novazzano and London, December 14, 2011 – Paradox Engineering and NEC Italia Spa announced that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a joint development of world-class Smart Energy solutions for utilities, multi-utilities and municipalities.

Smart Energy will play a key role to reach the European Union's energy efficiency goals for 2020. The EU estimates that smart electricity grids can reduce CO2 emissions by 9% and the annual household energy consumption by 10%, and also contribute to secure the efficiency of the electricity system with the integration of increasing amounts of renewable.

Paradox Engineering and NEC will share their knowledge in order to optimize their engineering efforts and identify opportunities for proof-of-concept and pilot projects, which will allow a smarter management of energy resources, and therefore increase sustainable performance of communities and cities.

“Through the collaboration with NEC, Paradox Engineering will contribute its innovation capability, know-how and solutions with organizations to pursue innovative energy strategies. The cooperation with NEC represents the ideal matching between competencies and solutions to address the needs of the energy sector with a comprehensive approach”, said Gianni Minetti, President and CEO of Paradox Engineering.

“In the framework of the NEC’s Smart energy plan in EMEA Region, the cooperation with Paradox Engineering is a significant step ahead in the development of effective localized solutions for SmartCities applications”, said Ugo Govigli, CEO of NEC Italia and EMEA Vice President Smart Energy Infrastructure and Solutions.”

The partnership enables to provide proven competences and innovative solutions to EMEA smart grid markets. As Paradox Engineering has matured a strong expertise in Smart Metering and Smart Grid technologies, it leverages its knowledge and capabilities in wireless sensor networks and global virtual networks. The company has recently introduced PE.AMI, a new solution for the specific needs of utilities and multi-utilities, providing a unified communication platform to manage advanced information from any type of meter (water, gas, electricity). It has a full range of applications from advanced meter reading and remote control of distribution networks to street lighting, solid waste, traffic, public transportation and parking management.

For NEC EMEA energy efficiency and Smart Grids are key topics and the new growth markets. Also thanks to its lithium-ion rechargeable battery business experience, NEC can offer valuable expertise and solutions for intelligent systems delivering energy management and storage. Italy represents for NEC a key market within EMEA, and NEC Italia is hosting the company’s European Competence Center for energy efficiency.

The synergy of both companies’ advantages will bring the new energy solutions leading most effective electricity grid distribution as well as energy managing system. Through its experience in Information and Communication technology, NEC is best positioned to deliver the elements and solutions that are necessary to build next generation electrical infrastructure.
