Swedish Nanotech company Nanologica is Top 5 in the World

Pressmeddelande   •   Jul 20, 2009 10:33 CEST

Nanologica is shortlisted as the top 5 most interesting material development company in the world by the World Technology Network in association with TIME, Fortune, and Science magazine.

The World Technology Network, consists of approximately 1,000 members from 60 countries. At this year's World Technology Summit & Awards Nanologica was nominated in the category: Materials (corporate). Nanologica was voted to be top 5 in its category together with companies and people like Virgin Galactic, Wired magazine, Barack Obama, Apple, Oracle and Cornell University.

"It is highly honorable that our work gets attention internationally. We have for several years worked with leading international academic and industrial partners and customers and it feels good that this work is now recognized by the World Technology Network", says Krim Talia, CEO Nanologica

Nanologica is a materials development company specializing in developing innovative nano-porous materials for a variety of applications (from Diagnostics and Drug Delivery to Solar cells). The company was founded in Uppsala in 2004 and its unique technology is based on nanotechnology research from Stockholm University and the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University. Nanologica's technology enables the creation of nano-porous materials with new properties as a function of material composition, size, and structure.

The importance of materials stuctures can be observed around us every day. An interesting example is carbon, depending on the atomic structure it can take the form of graphite (which is one of the softest existing substances) or diamond (which is one of the hardest). Achievements in nanotechnology allows scientists to, by intelligent design of materials on an atomic level, create materials with superior properties for specific target applications.

"We have with the support from Vinnova, Innovationsbron and a number of bold business angels taken our fundamentally new research from innovation to commercially viable products - a process that requires both research excellence and business sustainability. We have now reached a commercial breakthrough in a number of our application areas, and this nomination is proof that we draw attention far beyond the borders of Sweden", says Krim Talia, CEO Nanologica

Nanologica is developing materials for applications for the health-care and energy sectors. Nanologica's materials are used in diagnostic applications where nano porous particles have been functionlised with different fluorescent molecules that are then conjugated with antibodies to act as markers in diagnostic tests and analysis. Nanologica's material is also used as substrate for drug delivery in a collaborative project with one of the world's five largest pharmaceutical companies. The specific Nanologica material that is used in this process is called In vivo, and is now tested for constructing molecules that require a controlled delivery over a longer period than one week.

For the energy sector Nanologica has developed and patented materials and technology that significantly increases the efficiency of third generation solar cells. Nanologica material creates a turbo efficient in transparent DSSC solar cells which opens up new opportunities for integration of solar cells in for example skyscrapers and translucent windows applications. This technology has an important role to play in the overall trend towards environmentally sustainable buildings. The technology is commercialised by the Nanologica subsidiary NLAB Solar. World Technology Network (WTN) works in association with TIME magazine, Fortune magazine, Science magazine, the NASDAQ / OMX, Mayo Clinic, Advance Science Serving Society and the New York Academy of Sciences. WTN consists of 1,000 members from 60 countries. Its members are focused on the business and science of bringing important emerging technologies of all types (from biotech to new materials, from IT to new energy sources) into reality. WTN was created to encourage serendipity and is an elite network of people working to change the world. For more information visit www.wtn.net
