On Friday September 24, Mikaela Laurén beat the New York boxer Jill Emery in Karlstad, Sweden. The two boxers fought about the WPBF title, which has been vacant since Swedish Anna Ingman decided not to defend the title.

Before the match, Emery with her greater experience as a boxer was considered the favorite. Emery, 40 years old, southpaw has completed 12 matches and has twice fought in title matches over ten rounds with the record one win and one loss.

Laurén, 34, born in Stockholm has fought 5 professional and 14 amateur fights before the title fight. In 2008 she decided to apply for the license as a professional boxer. The debut took place in April of 2009 against Sandra Kirchbaum in Germany. Emery and Laurén have earlier sparred togehter at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, NY, when Mikaela Laurén was there training shortly after becoming a pro fighter.

"I have never been this well prepared for a fight before,” said Laurén before the match. She added, “but it´s the toughest fight so far in my career. Emery is experienced, tough and the fact that she is southpaw makes me a bit concerned.”

The title fight in Karlstad, which was one of six fights at the “Nights of the Champions” gala, started with two rounds where the two boxers checked each other out and nothing spectacular happened. In the third round, Laurén got in to the fight and boxed focused, using her left jab efficiently. She stayed focused throughout the match.

Laurén won the fight over six rounds. The three referees judged 59 - 56, 59 -56 and 58 – 56, all three in Mikaela Laurén’s favor.

“I’m so happy. I’ve trained so hard and now it’s pay off time,” said Laurén afterwards. She couldn’t resist adding, “this is only the beginning. You haven’t seen my full potential yet.”

Laurén competes for the stall New Sweden and fights in the Welterweight class. Laurén is coached by Carlos Echegaray, the head coach of club BK Dalen. Her record is 6-0 (1KO) and before the title match she was ranked number five in Europe and 10th in the world.

"Mikaela fought with great focus, kept her own boxing style without being disturbed by Emery’s boxing" says Echegaray. "I’m really proud of her. She hasn’t done this well ever before.”
