Political groups week - Brussels

Lisbon Strategy - Joint Parliamentary Meeting. For the third year running MEPs will be joined by national MPs from around Europe to discuss progress made under the Lisbon Strategy, aimed at improving the long-term performance of the European economy. The two day meeting, jointly chaired by EP President Hans-Gert Poettering and the President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, will focus in particular on issues relating to energy, innovation and human capital (Monday and Tuesday).

Preparing for the plenary. Parliament's political groups will devote most of the week to preparations for the Strasbourg plenary session on 12-15 February. The plenary agenda includes debates on the final report of the temporary committee on allegations of illegal CIA activity in Europe, on legislation on the disposal and recycling of waste, and on preparations for the Spring European Council. President Poettering will address Parliament on his plans for his term in office - German Chancellor and Council President-in-office Angela Merkel and Commission President José Manuel Barroso will join the debate which follows. The President of Italy, Giorgio Napoletano, will address MEPs in a formal sitting.

Pre-session press briefing. Any changes to the plenary agenda made by the Conference of President will be announced at the regular press briefing at 11am on Friday 9 February.

Euro-Med Parliamentary Assembly Bureau. President Poettering will travel to Tunis to take part in a meeting of the Bureau of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (Saturday).

Citizens' Forums. The latest in Parliament's series of meetings enabling members of the public to join the debate on the future of Europe will take place in Maastricht (Wednesday), Riga and Florence (both Friday).
