Viganj to welcome world elite: Windsurfing world championship to kick off

In the period between July 8 and 13 Croatia’s Viganj and the Pelješac Peninsula will host the 2013 Formula Windsurfing World Championship. Viganj beat San Francisco in the race for the host of this prestigious sporting event titled 2013 ‘ESET NOD32 Antivirus’ FORMULA WINDSURFING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP powered by NORT.d.o.o.

Over 150 of the top windsurfers will arrive in Viganj from all over the world, including world’s most popular windsurfer and multiple world windsurfing champion Antoine Albeau. Pelješac will also welcome current Formula Windsurfing World Champion Ross Williams and Vice Champion Arnon Dagan, as well as Alberto Menegatti and many other famous windsurfers.

Croatia’s colors will be defended by the two-time Olympian and multiple champion in various disciplines Luka Mratović, multiple Croatian champion Ante Berlengi, one of the best young hopefuls of the Croatian windsurfing Enrico Marotti, and Viganj’s top surfer Darko Antunović.

The world championship will be accompanied by a rich cultural and entertainment program. Moreover, in order for the spectators to enjoy the skills of the best windsurfers in the world, the organizers have prepared a colorful daily entertainment program at the main Ponta beach.

The first world championship took place in the year 2000, while the 2012 one was hosted by Liepāja, Latvia, where Poland’s Agnieszka Pietrasik and UK’s Ross Williams surfed their way to the world champion titles. Before Liepāja, the world championships were hosted by Thailand’s Pattaya, Brazil’s Fortaleze (two-time championship host), Germany’s Sylt and Dranske, Poland’s Leba, Australia’s Melbourne, South Korea’s Gangeung, Estonia’s Tallinn, Portugal’s Alvor, Spain’s Santa Pola, Argentina’s Mendoza and Puerto Rico’s San Juan.

Over the past few years Viganj has become the favorite spot for windsurfers from around the world. Surfing conditions are perfect; there is enough wind and, more importantly, one can surf all year long.
