Milliken Gallery is pleased to announce “The Big White,” Olav Westphalen’s 3rd solo exhibition at the gallery, comprising of a series of new drawings and a large-scale sculptural group. In conjunction with this exhibition, the first of a new series of critical essays written by independent writers that will be released with each exhibition. This first is entitled

Westphalen’s recent solo shows include “The Disciplines,” Brandenburgischer Kunstverein, Potsdam, Germany, “Polish Scores,” Center for Contemporary Art, Warsaw, “Le Grand Blanc,” Galerie Vallois, Paris, “Avenger of Widows and Orphans,” Galerie Klosterfelde, Berlin “The First Long Island City Blimp Derby,” Sculpture Center, New York. He has recently been included in “Draft Deceit,” Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, “Situation Comedy: Humor in Recent Art”, The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu (and other venues), “The Whitney Biennial,” (2004) Whitney Museum of American Art. He has held artist’s residencies at IASPIS, Stockholm, Sculpture Center, New York, OCA (Office of Contemporary Art) in Oslo.

Starting this fall, Olav Westphalen will be a professor at the Royal Academy University College of Art (KKH) in Stockholm. Together with Marcus Weimer he will be awarded the “Sondermann Preis Für Komische Kunst,” at this year’s Frankfurt Bookfair for their collaborative work in cartoons and comics.

Ronald Jones, the artist and critic, is Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Konstfack, where he leads the Experience Design Group and co-directs WIRE, the MA program in curatorial practice and critical writing. He writes regularly for Artforum and frieze.
