Grants for international lights-students

Grants for international students attending the Lights in Alingsås festival are here to stay. Twenty-five grants of 3000 SEK each are being awarded to design students who wish to take part in the Lights in Alingsås workshop this autumn.

“We don’t want the issue of cost to stop people from participating,” says project developer Anna Davidsson.

Every year, more than 60 lighting designers and architecture students come to Alingsås to participate in the prestigious workshop organized by the Lights in Alingsås festival. But students come from all over the world and for some of them the trip can be expensive. Air tickets, accommodation and registration fees add up, particularly for people based outside Europe, and ultimately the sum can deter many future lighting designers from attending.

So last year Lights in Alingsås, acting though its parent companyAB Alingsås Rådhus (ABAR), decided to award grants which would enable more people to attend. The results were positive and this year the procedure will be repeated. Twenty-five successful applicants will receive 3000 SK each.

”We don’t want attendance at Lights in Alingsås to be decided by cost. For that reason we are offering as many students as possible with a passionate interest in lighting design the opportunity to participate in our workshop,” says Anna Davidsson, the festival’s project developer.

The workshop will take place between the 19 and 26 September and this year students can explore both sound and light. After a week’s intensive training they will participate in creating the installations which will make up 2015’s Lights in Alingsås light trail. Approximately 85,000 visitors are expected during the five weeks the festival will be held. This year has been named the International year of light by UNESCO and this has been reflected in the theme chosen for this year’s festival in Alingsås, the Evolution of light.

”Like the United Nations, we are hoping the world is becoming more enlightened - in all senses of the word. One way for us to contribute is by offering financial assistance to students who aren’t so well-off,“ says Anna Davidsson.

LIGHTS IN ALINGSÅS

Every October since the year 2000, leading lighting designers have been invited to Alingsås to demonstrate their expertise. For five weeks, dar evenings and outdoor environments are turned into fascinating and exciting lighting installations. Cold, anonymous facades are transformed into warm and colorful spaces, forest lakes can get a whole new perspective, and these oases of light provide new attractive venues in the town.

Lights in Alingsås attracts more than 85 000 visitors every year and the urban lighting exhibition has become the largest lighting event in public spaces in Northern Europe. Lights in Alingsås is an important meeting point for lighting designers, students and professionals who work with light. The owner of the project is the municipality of Alingsås, who make the project possible through partners such as Sparbanken Alingsås, Alingsås Energi, FABS and Alingsåshem.
