20140912 Animal News around the World - meet Aysha Akhtar

Aysha Akhtar is Board certified in both neurology and preventive medicine and works for the Office of Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats of the Food and Drug Administration. She is LCDR in the US Public Health Service.

Dr. Akhtar is a graduate of the Eastern Virginia Medical School. She subsequently completed her general medicine internship at Washington Hospital Center and her neurology and preventive medicine residencies at the University of North Carolina Medical School in Chapel Hill. She received her Masters in Public Health at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health, where she focused on bioethics. She has served on several Institutional Review Boards for the protection of human subjects in research.

Dr. Akhtar has spoken and written extensively on the connection between animal protection and human health. She appeared in the T.V. show "30 Days" by Morgan Spurlock discussing animal research and is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics.

In addition to exploring the effects of the treatment of animals on human health, Dr. Akhtar also specializes in biosurveillance and drug safety and efficacy.
