Big Swede living the Hollywood dream

When KISS plays sold out shows, Stefan "Big Swede" Svensson's fat drum samples/sounds are a big part of it. The pulse and tempo of shows like NCIS (NavyCIS) are also being created in his studio, in downtown Los Angeles.

A lot of people arrive in the city of dreams/angels to try and make it in entertainment. Only a few succeed. Big Swede, from Sweden, is one of those.

He arrived in Los Angeles 1995 as a drummer. The dream of being able to compose his own music and songs, led him to buy his own equipment and start his own studio in 2002. The gigs are now pouring in 10 years later.

TV- and film music

In his studio, Big Swede Studios, music is being created for tv- and film, that is being seen all over the world. NCIS, NCIS: LA, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, CSI: Miami, 90210, Real World, Punk'd and Alphas are among the television shows.

Big Swede composes for particular projects or draws from a catalog of over 600 tracks.

The right sound and vibe

It's all about finding the right sound and vibe. Big Swede has got that. He was given the prestigious task to program the Ddrum drum sounds, for  Eric Singer, drummmer for KISS, for their tour this year.

- If you do a good job, others will follow. I did the intro and some sounds/programming for Van Halen's reunion tour as well. I got to do drum samples/sounds for Slash world tour 2010-2011 and also 2012. It has become one of my specialities to tweak a fat, punchy drum sound for the kind of rock that are my roots, says the Los Angeles based Swede. But my main thing is my electronica composing.

A Swede in LA

- It is common knowledge that Americans have huge respect for Swedish bands and producers. There is something in the way Swedes are creating their music, a feeling and a vibe, that I bring with me from my roots and upbringing, says Big Swede. 

- Then of course, me living in LA has a very big influence on what I'm doing. Everything that I have experienced. The move to LA has influenced me immensely and my music would not have sounded the same if i was living in Sweden. I get inspired from the city and all the people that I meet and work with.

Music in games and commercials

The most prestigious commercial for Big Swede so far was the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster featuring Roger Federer.

- Another fun project was when I stayed a week at Skywalker Sound (Lucas Film), outside San Francisco for the Swedish version mix of the first animated Star Wars movie: Star Wars: The Clone Wars, says Big Swede.
