Why Bother with Standards in Business Architecture?

I’ve recently asked a Business Architect at a major retail company why they did not bother following any standards, in particular those described by the BIZBOK® guide published by the Business Architecture Guild. I was stunt by the answer. He said roughly that BIZBOK® was too complicated, got too deep, was too close to IT, and that he preferred a free form approach picking a little bit from everywhere and not to involve IT.
