Our story

We, Joanna Bark and Elena Ekström, first met as 7 year olds when Joanna offered Elena mud cake on the first day of school. The next thing we remember is us sitting in the top of a tree telling each other about our favorite games. We have been best friends since and have done everything together from the first love (the same guy), teenage sadness and stupidities, clubbing, travelling, shared apartments and so on.

Our first dreams of making our own brand started when we watched the film Clueless. But since we are a bit more tedious we cannot only create a nice looking bag – it has to be the perfect bag and it must be able to transform.

As kids we were both really scared of the ocean even though we went on the Silja Line boat to Elenas relatives in northern Finland. We realized that we would be in need of an escape bag in case we would get in the water for some reason. We needed a bag to live in. Inspired by Gadget man and Skalman (Bollebof) in the cartoon Bamse we draw all kinds of incredible bag-inventions.

In 2013 it all started again. We were both living on the run, bicycling everywhere in the city carrying bags, bags in the bags and more shopping bags in our hands. We were in desperate need of a bag that evolves with us during the day.

Joanna is an architect dropout in massive need of freedom and escaping the rules. Elena has been working in the IT industry for 10 years and was in great need of adventure. Bukvy is our own limitless universe where there is no NO but only YES.
