Why so serious?

Curious about the most stigmatised gambling symbol that’s out there?Well, it’s no Joke – it’s the Joker!

A Wild mostly has positive connotations and stands for possibility and prosperity, however, just as the Joker can be an extremely favourable symbol, it can also be harmful when playing cards.

The term “Joker’s Wild” originates from the Joker acting as well, yes… a Wild. And as we all know, Wilds are highly positive symbols when playing on slot machines… However, the Joker can be somewhat of a “sneaky Wild” regarding other areas within gambling. Thereof, the stigmatised aura which surrounds our world’s most famous fool. Since in fact, the word “Joker” comes from the actual career choice in the medieval times – to be a fool and an entertainer of the court.

If we look to popular culture, as we love to do at Casino Heroes, the image of the Joker is less disputable and has become a malicious and tragic symbol. If we look back to 1957, no other than Frank Sinatra portrayed a troubled man in the movie The Joker is a Wild, revolving around an entertainer that got his throat slit, survived but fell into a life of destructiveness.

And while mentioning doomed entertainers we have no choice but to salute the most famous Joker of our time, Heath Ledger, of which whom it would be blasphemy not to mention. The late actor did an extraordinary performance in the Batman movie The Dark Knight,  where he played a character which showed ambiguity and depth.

Not only is Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the villain one of our most memorable, but what fuels the dooming aura around Heath is that his Joker characterization is said to have killed him. Through method acting they say, Heath – like the character of Sinatra – fell onto a path of destructiveness which caused his death.

Which brings us to the very title and famous Joker-headline of this dooming little piece of info-article, which is; “Why so serious?” which is followed by “let’s put a smile on that face”… Well, a Wild card can turn either way…

A card that can be anything infuses both anticipation and fear. And is there not anything more delightful? To feel the thrill and the chill at the same time?

And so, back to the question; what is it with the Joker that we fear? Well, this is the very answer to our question… We don’t know. And the unknown has since the beginning of time scared the sh*t out of mankind.
