Merry-Go-Round goes Formex

In our first Merry-Go-Round collection, Design Stories and Returhuset are working together, making tables and lamps made out of amazing materials which could otherwise have be called trash. Now these materials have been given the chance to glow, to shine, to come forward.

The fabric in Drawstring Lamp is made by Svensson Markspelle, and is originally used as a screen to beautifully filter sunlight, making it well suited for lighting products. This textile also happens to possess a structure allowing it to be self-supporting in an organic yet symmetrical way. Inspired by the fabulous fabric we brought ourselves to Göteborg’s historic Belt Factory, and there we designed fabric power cords to complement the lampshade.

Odd Table is a living room table made of furniture parts. By taking the good parts from broken tables and chairs and bringing them together into a new constellation, a new interesting piece of furniture is created telling the stories of its former lives.

Merry-Go-Round is a collaboration between Kerstin Sylwan and Jenny Stefansdotter from the design studio Design Stories and the producers and artisans at Returhuset, both based in Göteborg, Sweden. The manufacturing process at Returhuset is part of a job training program for the unemployed.
“We use industrial waste and select recycled materials from local businesses and organizations and show their possibilities by creating interior products,” explains Kerstin Sylwan.
“The variation in materials inspires us in our design process, and we like to let the nature of the materi- als follow through into the final product,” adds Jenny Stefansdotter..

Design Stories use design as a tool to visualize and enable change. We often collaborate with not-for- profit and social organizations to test new ways to design and produce artifacts. We also want to in- fluence society by using design to change the perception of what and who has value. When we make products using good material previously labeled as junk, we turn it into a valuable resource.

We present Odd Table and Draw String Lamp from our first collection in Merry-Go-Round. Visit us in Stockholm at Formex Next Step 17-20 January, stand B16:41 and Designgalleriet’s exhibition Check In during Stockholm Design Week 4-10 February. Design Stories work with design to create new stories; to tell and to visualise them. Inspiring design is created through putting products, environments, and companies in meaningful contexts.

Design Stories use design as a tool for visualizing and enabling change. We want to show the visionary potential of design and the design method’s ability to be part of defining society. A common working method for us is to collaborate with non-profit and social organizations to test new ways of designing and producing artifacts as well as trying to alter the societal fabric – that is, to use design to change the perception of what and who has value. Our emphasis is on social and environmental issues and the implications this has on design and production. We aim to create more beauty from less resources.
