Geology students – the key to an innovative and competitive Mining Industry in Sweden

The 8th of May a workshop supported by the Strategic Innovation Programme for the Swedish Mining and Metal Producing Industry (STRIM) took place at Minalyze. The aim with the workshop was to inspire students who soon will become professional geologists to innovate and shape the industry of the future.

Master level geology students from five Swedish universities were invited to apply and ten students from the universities of Lund, Stockholm and Gothenburg were appointed to participate.

As inspiration for innovation the company Minalyze was used as an example. Included in the workshop was also drill core scanning with the instrument Minalyzer CS as well as geochemical drill core logging. Besides an extensive geological competence, the group of students also carried a genuine interest for innovation and entrepreneurship. Qualities that came through during the day but in particular when discussing how they as individuals and employee can contribute to the STRIM vision. The ideas were many and in summary the connections between university and the industry needs to be better and the gap can be overbridged by networking, e.g. involve former students and students in industry organizations and arrange case challenges initiated by the industry.

Annelie Lundström CEO, Minalyze concludes the workshop: It has been very inspiring to spend the day with motivated students with an interest both in innovation and geology. As in many other industries the challenge is to maintain the fresh optimism newly graduated brings and I believe the discussions at Minalyze have touched upon one solution- erase the sharp shift between education and organizations through collaborations.
