Australian Wine Tasting

The Australians are set to take Stockholm by storm, as nearly 60 producers and distributors descend on the Grand Hôtel on 1 October for Wine Australia’s annual tasting.

With over 250 wines from across 32 regions, trade and media will get a taste of the country’s most exciting and diverse styles of wine, from classic to contemporary, rogue to the refined. Renowned regions like McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Margaret River will be on show, plus less familiar regions such as Orange, Heathcote and Frankland River.

Guests will be able to experience the evolution of Chardonnay and Shiraz, comparing older vintages with newer releases, and taste alternative varieties such as Vermentino and Tempranillo, as well as more unusual varieties like Saperavi and Savagnin. The line-up will demonstrate that Australian winemakers aren’t beholden by tradition, they continue to innovate, experiment and push the creative boundaries. Here’s your chance to try the hottest new styles, organic and biodynamic wines, and natural and minimal intervention wines.

Elizabeth Reed of Flor Marché, focusing on small batch natural winemaking in Western Australia says:

With a vibrant gastronomic and wine scene, the Nordics is an important market and I’m excited to be part of the roadshow. I’m looking forward to introducing the trade to my 2018 Nouveau Wines, including a small parcel of Sangiovese from the Geographe region.’

Other winemakers and winery principals attending from Australia include Ben Heide (Patritti), David Paxton (Paxton Organic/Biodynamic Wines), Justin Fairweather (Alpha Box & Dice), Paul McArdle (Fraser Gallop Estate), Scott McWilliam (McWilliam's Family Winemakers) and Simon Gilbert (Gilbert Family Wines).

Some of the wineries at the event may be familiar names, but others might be new discoveries. 18 producers at the tasting aren’t yet in the Swedish market and are seeking distribution, for example Firebird, Penley Estate, Rob Dolan and Trentham Estate.

Heading up the Wine Australia team is Regional General Manager EMEA, Laura Jewell MW, who will be available for interviews about the state of the market during the event. Laura Jewell MW said:

The Australian wine landscape is more exciting than ever and now is the time to challenge preconceptions and show the exceptional quality and diversity of Australian wine. It’s incredible to have such a talented group of winemakers and principals visit Sweden to tell stories about the people, the places and processes that make Australian wine unique.’

Australian wine is thriving in Sweden: the Export Report (12 months to June 2018) shows that exports of Australian wine to Sweden are up 12% to AUD $23 million. Sign up to the tasting and discover why it’s such an exciting time for Australian wine.

Wine Australia will also visit Norway (27 September) and Finland (3 October) as part of its annual Nordic Roadshow.
