Who is responsible for corporate abuses against human rights?

Forum Syd & FIAN invites you to a lunch seminar on:

Who is responsible for corporate abuses against human rights?

  • When: Thursday 1st of February at 12-13.30. Lunch wraps are served from 11.30
  • Where: Hilton Slussen Hotel, Guldgränd 8. Metro station: Slussen

Around the world there are examples of businesses’ operations that result in environmental pollution, land grabbing, disrespect of labour standards and violence against human rights defenders. Currently, there are a series of regulatory gaps, some due to the fact that corporations operate internationally, while the laws regulating them have a national character. There is a lack of international regulation by States to ensure that the operations of corporations are conducted without incurring human and environmental rights abuses.

How can corporations be held accountable? How can we ensure protection of human rights from the activities of transnational corporations and other business enterprises? Are communities deprived of their right to land and food?

Main speaker is Ana Maria Suarez, a human rights lawyer originally from Colombia who will share her views on these issues. Ana Maria is currently the Permanent Representative of FIAN International before the UN Human Rights system in Geneva. She participated in the process towards the adoption of an International Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and the discussions on human rights and transnational companies. She has been working closely with communities affected by violations of the right to food and nutrition.

For interviews with Ana Maria Suarez contact Maja Magnusson, FIAN, at +46 735 520068 or maja.magnusson@fian.se.
