  • Osseointegrated femur prosthesis gives improved quality of life September 02, 2010 14:55

    A study is being presented today that for the first time ever shows the result of treatment with osseointegrated prostheses of titanium implants in patients with amputated femurs. The study shows that this treatment gives nine out of ten patients improved function and a better quality of life. These findings emerge from research by the Sahlgrenska Academy/Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Göteborg.

  • HIV virus hides in the brain August 30, 2010 11:53

    Studies of the spinal fluid of patients given anti-HIV drugs have resulted in new findings suggesting that the brain can act as a hiding place for the HIV virus. Around 10% of the patients showed traces of the virus in their spinal fluid but not in their blood -- a larger proportion than previously realised, reveals a thesis from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

    Medfield Diagnostics helmet/medical device for diagnosing stroke.

    Medfield Diagnostics, developing microwave-based diagnostic instruments for healthcare, has, as its very first product, created a helmet, a medical device for diagnosing stroke. The ultimate goal is that the proper stroke diagnosis can be made in the emergency stage, thus facilitating the correct form of treatment to be initiated more quickly. The company´s first clinical trial is promising.
