Jens Nielsen elected to the National Academy of Engineering
Jens Nielsen, professor of quantitative systems biology and director of the Chalmers University of Technology’s Life Science faculty, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering in the field of chemistry and biotechnology.
Membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the NAE, is granted to people who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, education and the development of pioneering technologies.
The core of Jens Nielsen’s research focuses on charting the cell’s metabolism down to the tiniest detail with the aim of developing new technologies for industrial biotechnology, more specifically new mathematical models that can be used for the design of improved cell factories.
Jens Nielsen has been elected to the NAE for his contributions to the development of biotechnology in yeast and mould aimed at producing dietary supplements and pharmaceutical intermediates.
The National Academy of Engineering, the NAE, is the USA’s independent institution for monitoring developments in the engineering sciences.
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature", and to the "pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education”.
