New opportunities for industrial and clinical partners in the area of Cardiovascular and Metabolic diseases

The recent BIO-X™ call for proposals “Meeting the needs in the area of Cardiovascular and Metabolic diseases" generated totally 14 project proposals from leading research teams. All proposals address needs for new innovative tools and methods for prevention, diagnosis or treatment. After the first evaluation process, 7 projects (listed below) have been selected for matchmaking and support in the next stage of the BIO-X programme. We are now looking for industrial and clinical partners with an interest in the technologies, applications and further development of the projects.

Unraveling stent, the first removable stent ever
A knitted stent that can unravel to the thread from which it was made and introduces new revolutionizing treatments including minimal invasive approaches to life threatening conditions

Pharmacological treatment of sleep apnea
A novel pharmacological strategy to treat obstructive sleep apnea and adjunct hypoxemia which combines reduction of apneas, reduction of body weight, reduction of blood pressure and improved blood glucose homeostasis

Metabolic control
A new drugable concept for intestinal mucosal nutrient sensing with potential to improve metabolic diseases

A novel pharmacological treatment of type 2 diabetes
Development of a novel therapy to be used as a single treatment at early stages of type 2 diabetes and as a complementary treatment to current first line drugs at the later stages, based on antagonists of a novel protein kinase

Stem-cell derived tissue-engineered vascular grafts for blood vessel replacement therapy
Solutions for generating vascular (veins and arteries) grafts from stem cells of patients with vascular disease (thrombotic veins, A-V fistulas, peripheral and coronary artery disease) and in need of vascular replacement surgery

The “Thrombosis Prevention Alternative" (TPA) solution
A novel method to enhance the body´s own blood clot dissolving system in order to prevent thrombotic cardiovascular disease

A new smart bandage that guides the user to apply an even and precise pressure

The BIO-X program offers a well-structured process, including project reviews and cost tracking, to support the team in reaching the goal. The industrial partner typically contributes to the project budget in cash and/or in kind, against a first right to negotiation.

BIO-X™ is a structured way to team up with leading academic teams to develop proofs of concept, proofs of mechanisms or proof of hypothesis for new life science products. In the Region Västra Götaland BIO-X is enabled by a close collaboration with Uppsala BIO, who has developed the process. Selected project in the final stages will receive support for up to two years and will be presented before the end of the year.
