Revolutionary approach to allergy prevention
2012-02-10 13:55
Serendipity Innovations AB, in association with Encubator AB, started the company Premune. This
new venture is based on an innovative project that was previously run by Encubator in cooperation
with Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship and the Sahlgrenska Academy. The project was launched in 2009 as part of the education where students run the business development of research ideas from both academia and industry. This process is unique and provides new opportunities to commercialize research innovations.
"We have already recruited a number of ambitious business developers from Encubator and are
excited to launch this new collaboration. Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship, in collaboration
with Encubator, offers Sweden's most unique entrepreneurial training," said Saeid Esmaeilzadeh,
CEO, Serendipity Innovations AB.
Allergies - a major health problem world-wide
Allergies are a major health concern and growing problem worldwide. By 2030, WHO estimates
that 50 percent of the world´s population will have one or more allergies. Children suffer the most,
and it is also for among them that the prevalence of allergies increases the fastest; allergic asthma
being the major concern. More than 300 million people suffer from allergic asthma, which today is
the main reason for school absence and also the leading cause of hospitalization among children.
Allergic asthma annually accounts for over 250 000 mortalities and induces costs to the society of
over USD20 billion. In Sweden, the incidence of allergy among children and adolescents has more
than tripled since the 80s.
World-leading research in Gothenburg
Premune is based on world-leading research in bacteriology and immunology, with 15 years of
clinical studies at the University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska Academy. Premune´s research team
consisting of professors Agnes Wold, Ingegerd Adlerberth and Anna Rudin have gone to the root
of the problem, showing that early stimulation of the immune system by a certain bacterial
superantigen induces the natural tolerance mechanisms. This revolutionizing prophylactic
treatment significantly reduces the risk of developing allergies.
Premune AB was introduced to the Serendipity portfolio in December 1st 2011.
