Companies, entrepreneurs and research scientists working in the disciplines described below are invited to apply for a Verification Grant from GöteborgBIO given in collaboration with Sahlgrenska Science Park. The grant is intended to fund bio-medical projects including pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, bio-materials and so forth. Closing date for application is October 1, 2010.

Aim of Grant
The grant is intended to be used to verify and guarantee the commercial potential of innovative research projects that have reached the conceptual or development phase. Projects that are in the initial research phase will not be considered.

Particular emphasis is to be placed on identifying and focusing the project on value added measures in preparation for future commercialisation.

The grant is given partly in the form of direct funding for verification activities, and partly in the form of advice and support to develop the business concept and manage the project. The project team will maintain control and the rights to the results of the activities (e.g. in the form of a patent, etc).

General verification activities that may be eligible for funding are, for instance:
- well defined conceptual studies and other key activities that contribute to enhancing the commercial potential of a project
- verification of the technical concept and regulatory requirements of a product

Who is eligible, how much and when?
Eligible applicants would be companies, entrepreneurs and research scientists working in the above-mentioned disciplines. The project is scheduled to start in January 2011 and run for one year, with the option to extend. The maximum grant awarded is 500 000 SEK. Projects that demonstrate excellent success potential may be eligible for further funding after an individual and separate review.

Assessment criteria
- complete application based on the application form
- viability in the form of clear commercialisation focus and realistic plan for achieving defined scientific and business goals
- competition aspects
- the project´s commercially vital assets before and after the relevant project period, for example verified proof of concept, pharmaceutical candidate/prototype, patent, business agreement etc.
- available initial financing for research work and plan for continued financing
- regional connection
- participating parties´/individuals´ competence and previous experience

Reporting
- written stage report on project status and achieved goals (milestones) as well as final report after conclusion of project period
- participate in regular project meetings with representative(s) of Sahlgrenska Science Park

Application, selection and decision-making process

- the selection process will be carried out by an assessment group in October-November 2010 with the support of an advisory board, all of whose participants work under terms of strict confidentiality
- a decision regarding project support will be taken by the process management of GöteborgBIO and applicants will be informed in December 2010
