Pressmeddelande -

We have revealed the coming season!

Norma. Gianni Schicchi & Die sieben Todsünden. Boris Gudonov. The 2017/2018 season is full to the brim with joy, passion, longing and indulgence. Grandiose opera performances, electrifying dance, inspiring orchestral concerts and the world’s best-loved musical.

Nina Stemme and several other reknowned sopranos will honour our godmother Birgit Nilsson, and internationally acclaimed choreographers Ohad Naharin and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will return.

Stephen Langridge, Artistic Director Opera/drama:
"We are living in a post-truth world. A world where public figures say one thing now and the opposite later without shame; where disinformation swirls around us in digital clouds; where Reality TV takes living people and distorts them into theatrical stereotypes; and where the daily news makes some of the most outlandish opera plots look rational. Here at the Göteborg Opera we are on a different mission. We are making honest, truthful fiction; we bring made-up characters to life as complex, detailed, and multi-dimensional human beings. Through music and song we aim to ignite the imagination, and find the empathy missing elsewhere as we imagine the world through someone else's eyes."

Katrín Hall, Artistic Director GöteborgsOperans Danskompani:
"My aim, hope and intention is to increase the awareness and visibility of this unique company and to share our passion for the art form by delivering highly ambitious dance productions. Next season will include new commissioned works by Sharon Eyal, Roy Assaf, Sang Jijia and Damien Jalet and we are honoured to continue working with Ohad Naharin.

A vital aspect of my vision is to create a platform for emerging choreographers, as well as nurture in-house talents. Therefore I am proud to present a new national co-production with The Royal Swedish Ballet and Skåne Dance Theatre. Three promising choreographers, one from each participating company, will be selected to create works for each other's artists.

We are also looking forward to increase the company’s international visibility and faultless reputation by performing at prestigious festivals and venues, such as Sadler's Wells and Théâtre National de Chaillot."

Opera and musical

Die sieben Todsünden & Gianni Schicchi 21 Oct 2017
Influences from jazz and cabaret – and Puccini’s uproarious comedy Gianni Schicchi (with one of the world’s most love arias: ‘O mio babbino caro’) are brought together in an inspired and decadent double-bill. The subject: loathsome people. The stage design combines the works into a single tale of excess, disdain, moral decay and sin. Director David Radok. Conductors Antony Hermus/Alexander Hanson.

Norma 2 Dec 2017
Bellini’s masterpiece is the pinnacle of bel canto opera. A tragic love triangle in a dangerous world of political and religious conflict is expressed through sensual and beautiful music. There are not many singers who can rise to the challenge, but we are proud to present a home team of singers in this production from Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Titlerole sung by mezzo soprano Katarina Karnéus. Director Stéphane Braunschweig. Conductor Giancarlo Andretta

Ariadne auf Naxos 3 Feb 2018
Richard Strauss’ beautiful opera of fervent passion and exuberant humour, is an ingenious and playful piece of theatre, that brings the conflict between ‘high’ art and popular culture to a head. A co-production with Opera North, this new staging is set in a 1950’s Fellini-style film studio replete with film stars, clowns … “and action!” Director Rodula Gaitanou. Conductor Patrik Ringborg

Boris Godunov 21 April 2018
Mussorgsky’s opera is a bold, intense and magnificent chronicle about how a charismatic man manages to deceive the masses – a theme that sadly has not lost its relevance. This original version of the opera shocked the Russian censors in 1869. Our interpretation is fiercely critical of today’s politics and society with its vulgar consumerism. A co-production with Nürnberg and Lübeck. Conductor Leo Hussain. Director Peter Konwitschny.

The Monster in the Maze 30 May
Jonathan Dove’s opera brings together over 200 people: opera singers, amateur singers of all ages, professional orchestral musicians and young musicians. Their mission: to defeat the Minotaur. Three of the main roles are played by three huge choruses put together especially for the production. Director Mattias Ermedahl. Conductor Martin Toft

The Phantom of the Opera 23 Sep 2017 Two major Nordic opera houses – the Göteborg Opera and the Finnish National Opera – have joined forces in an extravagant production – the first to be created for the fantastic opportunities that a real opera house can offer. The enduring narrative and music are given a lavish staging, and are interpreted by a large orchestra and opera chorus. Director Tiina Puumalainen. Conductors Nick Davies/Bjorn Dobbelaere/Cathrine Winnes

Dance

Kult 9 Sep 2017
This double-bill presents two of the leading artists in contemporary dance: Decadance Gothenburg by Ohad Naharin and Sacre by Roy Assaf. Naharin will develop a new version of his Decadance for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. Wonderfully ironic and exquisite, Sacre is a world premiere with Stravinsky’s masterpiece Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) performed together with the orchestra. Conductors Henrik Schaefer/Ariane Matiakh.

Damien Jalet & Icon 7 Nov 2017
A new creation by highly-acclaimed choreographer Damien Jalet, in combination with Icon by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (a co-production with Eastman). The latter being a revival with incomparable, stunning dancefeaturing live Japanese-Italian music, 18 outstanding dancers and 3.5 tonnes of clay.

Damien Jalet & Noetic 24 Nov 2017
The new creation by Damien Jalet, in combination with the international success Noetic by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Noetic explores man’s instinctive need to structure every detail of our existence, our longing to break free from the rules and to discover what lies beyond them.

S & S 3 March 2018
Two hypnotic creations – one by Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar, one by Sang Jijia – that seamlessly interweave dance, visual surprises and sound effects to a bold and seductive world premiere. The award-winning creative duo Eyal and Behar integrate dance, techno and technology. Former Forsythe-dancer Sang Jijia is a well-established choreographer in Asia, known for his alluring creations that inventively combine astounding physical dance with an emotional touch.

National Dance Collaboration Spring 2018
We proudly present a brand new collaboration between Sweden’s three foremost dance companies: GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, The Royal Swedish Ballet and Skånes Dansteater. Three choreographers, one from each company, will be selected to create new pieces for each other’s companies. The exciting result will be performed by the best dancers in the country.
