Cash Award AOGIN 2016 Singapore

Dr Srinivas receives award at AOGIN 2016 for her study on Performance of Gynocular T2D in Cervical Cancer Screening with Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid in Assessing Precancerous Lesion In Mysore, India

Dr Srinivas oral presentation of her Gynocular T2D study in rural India was presented at the AOGIN Singapore 14th of August and amongst 7 presentations, 3 presentations got a cash award.

“I am happy my presentation on Gynocular and the T2D was well received. I am very glad and proud to receive the cash award of $1500, which in turn will be handed over to our Organisation as donation, says Dr Vijaya”

Nearly 70% of the Indian population lives in rural areas which is often a barrier for access to care. Incorporating new technology and methodology for cervical cancer screening is therefore necessary to make screening programs successful. The aim of the study was to compare the performance of the Gynocular Swede score with that of Visual inspection of cervix with acetic acid (VIA) used in Cervical cancer screening in community setup.

These methods were used at community screenings around Mysore. Among the 159 cases, VIA positive were 48 (30.1%) Colposcopy provisional diagnosis of Low and high grade cervical lesions, were 42 (47.8% and 2 (1.32). As per the SWEDE score by Gynocular only 2 cases had a score of 5 (requiring treatment), and 11 cases had a score of 4 (requiring monitoring). Among the 36 Pap smear report taken for Inadequate VIA one was LSIL and 2 were HSIL.

Use of Gynocular prevented overtreatment of 22 % of participants, who, if tested by VIA alone, would require further treatment. Low grade VIA participants (47.8%) require follow up and high grade (1.32%) will be referred for treatment. Implications include broader access, improved accuracy and prevention of overtreatment in cervical cancer treatment.
