Pressmeddelande -
Harp Art Lab at PUBLIC - International seminar, Halmstad, Sweden
THE REASON WHY
This
seminar aims to reflect on the role and contribution that the
creative sector provides to making life in
cities sustainable, reinforcing
cohesive social fabric, offering opportunities for self-expression
and self-determination among citizen - including various disadvantaged groups.
Tackling both the ‘intrinsic’ and the ‘instrumental’ values of artistic
practice, You and your fellow
participants will investigate how the arts can play an instrumental role in
building a sustainable society. Cultural practice and participation are key
factors for social and personal wellbeing as well for a necessity in tackling a
fast changing social and economic environment. By
focusing on the social impacts of the site-specific and outdoor arts, we want to
investigate further several areas like social cohesion and city planning,
community building through
contemporary creation, participation of the audiences/citizens in the making of
arts works, and the evaluation of their experience, etc. Site-specific,
participative projects and outdoor creation can be powerful key drivers
for the sustainable development in both urban and rural environments. Despite
that its value and importance is widely recognized (even if not always ‘measured’),
few local authorities have actually implemented a comprehensive strategy.

In 2012 the lab initiated the wind driven, site specific sound installation MILLOPHONIA. This year we continue our work about sustainability and climate change in BZZZ SOUND ART FESTIVAL 2014, a project about the life of honey bees and the current threats as Colony Collapse Disorder.
Our main methodology is a socially engaged and discursive sound art practice. The motivations behind our work are predominantly environmental, political, and social in as much as we are attempting to re-mediate contested territories in a scientific and creative way to the public.
