New mobile app will help MS patients control their health
All patients with multiple sclerosis, whether receiving medication or not, can use the new app, called the SymTrac. It has been designed by people that have MS in association with healthcare professionals in order to improve the treatment of MS. The app records a patient's MS symptoms, general wellbeing, their medications and other potential influences, such as the weather. Behind this new health care app lie Novartis and the Swedish company Pond Healthcare Innovation and Aurora Communications in the UK.
”It has been released to try to help the thousands of people that have multiple sclerosis. The benefit for the patients living with this chronic disease was top of mind when we developed this app”, says Daniel Taub, CEO at Pond Healthcare Innovation.
The information recorded can help the patient’s healthcare team ensure that they are fully up-to-date in terms of monitoring any changes in the patient’s condition. Building up a clear picture of changing symptoms is particularly important for people with MS as this is a long-term fluctuating condition which often includes periods of relapse and remission.
”It is important that neurologists have a clear picture of whether or not multiple sclerosis patients are experiencing relapses, as relapses of any severity are a sign of active disease, says Ed Potter, MS Brand Manager Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK that also has been in charge of the development of this new App. The reporting of relapses is therefore key for making the right decisions about lifestyle and treatment changes. This will also help people get access to the right medications.
“If the app gains sufficient traction among patients it will also provide healthcare professionals with real world evidence on how well particular treatments suit particular patients”, says Daniel Taub.
SymTrac free iPhone app can be found on the App Store in UK and is free for users of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch running iOS 6.0 and later. The android version promised to be coming soon.
